Toba is known as the first place in the world where pearls were successfully cultured. Pearls are created inside Akoya oysters, but the people who collected the oysters from the seabed, placed the irritant inside, returned them to the seabed, and protected them from typhoons and red tides were the ama. So the ama have been an important presence in pearl cultivation.
